A modern glass extension and downstairs remodelling to add light and improve flow

The homeowners approached us with a relatively simple request to replace an existing conservatory with a modern glass extension to overcome the issues they had with their dark kitchen/dining area that overheated in summer and was freezing cold in winter.

By visiting the property, talking through their ideas, and exploring examples of other projects, we were able to challenge and expand their thinking by suggesting going further.

Removing the internal connecting corridor that chopped up the space and remodelling the kitchen, dining, hallway and utility area would not only overcome the issues they had with their kitchen, but completely transform the experience of entering and moving through the house.

This simple design change, while requiring some additional structural support to achieve, has unlocked the full potential of the house. The replacement glazed extension could therefore be smaller in size from what the client initially envisaged while still achieving the generous open-plan design they desired.

Maximum light at strategic points and glimpses of the garden from the front door have created the flow and impact the house was missing. The extended utility room is now fully functional and the adjoining room that was underused due to lack of purpose has become a cinema room for entertaining family and friends.

The result is a Scandi-inspired, modern, open-plan kitchen/dining room with space for a comfy reading corner looking out over the magnificent garden.

“We originally found Bronwen at Connected Architecture through Houzz, and have been very happy clients throughout the design and build of our project (a ground floor extension plus significant internal reconfiguration). Bronwen understood what we were trying to achieve, and provided us with good, thoughtful advice and design suggestions, fully meeting our brief. She managed all the planning requirements extremely smoothly and always kept us well-informed on progress. She also made some excellent recommendations of builders, building control inspectors and and glass suppliers, based on her experience with previous client projects. While we didn’t use her to project manage the build, she was responsive on the rare occasions that the builders had questions. She was also a genuine pleasure to work with throughout. Overall, I couldn’t recommend her highly enough, and hope to have the opportunity to work with her again.”
